报告摘要:
Advances in materials science are crucial for addressing global challenges such as climate change and breakthroughs in quantum technologies. My research focuses on two main areas in response to these issues.
The first involves metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), highly tunable and porous materials ideal for gas capture, hydrogen storage, and water harvesting. Our work centers on using MOFs for efficient gas separation, particularly their selective adsorption of CO₂, hydrocarbons, and toxic gases under humid conditions. This is essential for real-world applications like carbon capture and hydrocarbon separation. We also explore MOFs' potential in atmospheric water harvesting for arid regions and their role in hydrogen storage for clean energy systems.
The second research area is quantum materials, especially silicon semiconductor spin qubits, where low-frequency charge noise hampers qubit performance. By investigating the material origins of this noise, we aim to improve quantum device stability. Materials science plays a critical but often underappreciated role in enabling both environmental and quantum technological innovations.

Dr. Saif Ullah earned his PhD in physics from the Federal University of Juiz de Fora, Brazil, focusing on the theoretical characterization of 2D materials. He later joined Wake Forest University, USA, as a postdoc and was promoted to Research Assistant Professor, and worked on guest interactions in MOFs. Since June 2024, he has been a Research Scientist at the University at Buffalo, USA, studying material properties relevant to spin qubits. He has authored/co-authored over 55 journal publications.
